Cécile, a young French model, lives in Paris with Philippe, a wealthy older man, but in spite of their deep love, romance and excitement are absent from their relationship. Hoping for time to assess her emotions, Cécile goes to London on a 6-day assignment with Dickinson, an amorous photographer. At their hotel she runs into Vincent, a carefree French geologist whom she met once in France; he follows her everywhere and wears down her resistance until she consents to go away with him on a motor trip. Dressed in a wedding gown from one of her posing sessions, Cécile pretends that their vacation to Scotland is a honeymoon, particularly when McClintock, a genial laird, lends them his castle. After a week's idyll, they return to London, where Cécile receives a telephone call from Philippe. Torn between the mature concern of her former lover and the impulsive romanticism of Vincent, who now insists that she join him on a Far Eastern jaunt, Cécile delays her decision until the last minute. She finally chooses Vincent but arrives at the airport too late to catch the plane that is taking him away from her. After an objective look at herself, Cécile accepts the fact that her recent affair was merely an interlude and that Philippe offers her a more stable life and love.
