Millionairess Mary Morton sues newspaper publisher "Mickey" McGuire for damages after reporter Frank Barnes writes an unfavorable article about her. She wins her case and Mickey, claiming that he cannot pay her, turns the newspaper over to her. Confidentially, he tells Frank that he plans to run the newspaper into the ground, which would enable him to buy it back, cheap. The first night, Mary arrives at the newspaper office with her society friends, fresh from the theater. She sweet-talks Frank into staying on the job and gives the entire staff a raise. Frank gets more than enough inside information from Mary's friends to fill the paper. After they put the paper to bed, Frank takes Mary to a local reporter's hangout, where they meet Mickey, who is not happy about the excellent job Mary has done. His next trick is to phone each reporter, pretending to be from the paper, to offer each one a week's paid vacation. When none of the staff comes to work that evening, Mary suggests that they let the man on the street write the paper. Despite all of Mickey's efforts, the paper continues to make money. Meanwhile, Mickey and Mary are falling in love. Frank is also in love with Mary and jealously tries to interfere with Mickey's romantic overtures. In desperation, Mickey sends sexy Isabel Foster to invite Mary's father John home for a meal. While he is there, Mickey sends an anonymous tip to the paper claiming that Morton has been kidnapped. He intends to reveal the truth once the paper is published in order to embarrass Mary. Once again, however, his plan backfires when Morton, needing a rest, talks Isabel's brothers into taking him to their mountain cabin. Not knowing about the ruse, Mary is worried about her father and begs Mickey to help her find him. She wheedles the truth out of Isabel, and the two women race to the cabin, followed by Frank and Mickey. When Mickey learns that Frank has put out an edition naming Mickey as the instigator of Morton's kidnapping, Morton suggests that Mickey sue the paper for libel and win it back from Mary. Instead, Mary and Mickey exchange romantic looks that suggest they will be running the paper together.
