Alan Kennebeck, a banker from Milwaukee, arrives in Stockholm to verify the final details of a $1 million loan from his bank to a Swedish factory. One of the conditions of the loan is an insurance policy on the life of the factory owner, Eklund, who has been away from Sweden for many years. Kennebeck is met by factory manager Erik Walderman, who has been embezzling from the company. During the investigation, Kennebeck falls in love with Anita, Walderman's sister-in-law, and asks her to marry him. Though she discourages his attentions, Kennebeck goes home, divorces his wife, and returns to Stockholm. When Anita rejects him, he joins forces with Walderman and, as proof of his intentions, makes him the beneficiary of Eklund's insurance policy. Matters come to a climax when Eklund unexpectedly returns. Walderman persuades Kennebeck that they must murder Eklund, but before they can complete their plans, Eklund commits suicide. To insure payment of the policy money, Walderman orders Kennebeck to make the death look like murder. The police suddenly arrive, and Kennebeck becomes the victim of his own plot. He escapes long enough to kill Walderman, but he is then apprehended.
