While on the trail, a gunfighter known as Chuka gives some of his food to Hanu, chief of a tribe of starving Arapahoe Indians. A short time later, they come upon a disabled stagecoach, and Hanu repays his debt to Chuka by sparing the lives of the passengers, including Veronica, a widowed Mexican aristocrat with whom Chuka had been in love: Veronica was forced to reject him because of his lowly status. Chuka leads the stranded travelers to a nearby fort garrisoned by an undisciplined company of misfits and commanded by Colonel Valois, a martinet tortured by the memory that, while he was a British officer in India, his entire regiment had been slaughtered while he was in a drunken stupor. When the Arapahoes surround the fort and capture a scouting party, Chuka rescues Trent, the sole survivor of the party, and returns to warn Valois that an Indian attack is imminent and to advise him to take the offensive against the Indians. Valois scorns the suggestion, however, and ignores that his men have taken to quarreling among themselves, sleeping with Indian women, and discussing a possible mutiny. On the eve of the attack, Chuka is reunited with Veronica; suddenly, an Indian woman stabs her sleeping partner and sets fire to the fort. The Arapahoes swarm over the walls, and Valois, impeccably dressed for battle, is killed along with everyone else by the marauding Indians. Later a cavalry troop arrives at the fort, and among the blackened ruins they find a single grave--Veronica's--marked with a cross and an empty gun holster. There is no sign of Chuka.
