In a midwestern city Dave Poohler is hospitalized when found unconscious in a park. While delirious, he confesses to being a hired killer, but he escapes when he regains consciousness. Police Chief Sam Cahill, tipped by attending physician Nick Andros and prodded by reporter Frank Quinn, issues an alert for the man. Dave contacts his girl friend Thelma Dwyer and their boss John Shankalien, who is arranging the murder of multimillionaire Owen Brady for fellow businessman George DeSalles. Dave trails Brady to a cocktail lounge, picks up go-go dancer Maryjane, and is spotted by a passing patrolman. Dave is wounded in a shoot-out at Maryjane's apartment, but he again escapes and confronts Brady at his home. Brady flees when Dave loses his gun, but he is chased by Dave in his car. Cahill, notified by Brady's girl friend Gloria, stops the would-be assassin, who perishes in a fiery crash. Dave's co-conspirators are apprehended.
