In 16th-century Japan, during a period of civil wars, Shingen Takeda, the strongest of all warlords, hires veteran warrior Kansuke Yamamoto as his advisor. Despite Yamamoto's advice, Takeda hesitates to attack a rival, Lord Suwa, as he considers Suwa his brother-in-law. At first Yamamoto rejects this rationale, for Suwa's wife is dead, but the advisor eventually effects a peaceful reconciliation between the rivals. Then, when least expected, Yamamoto has Suwa murdered. Takeda reacts to the assassination with reluctant approval, while Princess Yufu, Suwa's daughter, attempts suicide. Yamamoto saves her and falls in love with the woman who now hates him. Takeda also becomes enamored of the princess, however, and she finally submits to his advances; she marries him and bears him a son but dies 4 years later. Takeda's reign continues until he is challenged by Kenshin Uesugi, and in Aug 1561 armies under the two rivals meet in a titanic battle during which Yamamoto is killed.
