Richard Hall, a successful writer, is married to a woman intent on a singing career. She meets James Hamilton and through his influence is engaged to sing at the Opéra in Paris. Hall puts their child into his mother's care, but unable to endure the separation, he begs his wife to return. In a jealous rage, he kills Hamilton and is sentenced to life imprisonment. After 20 years, he is paroled and meets his daughter, Grace, secretary to philanthropist John Reed. Refusing aid, he is arrested as a suspicious character and begs to be returned to prison, but he is persuaded to live with his daughter and Reed when they marry.
