Hsin Lien, the only daughter of Dr. Wang, chief of Hong Kong's refugee clinic, is studying in Tokyo when she meets Toru, whom she had known previously in Hong Kong. Although Toru is attracted to her, Hsin Lien decides to discourage his advances because she believes Kanako, a girl with whose family she is living, is in love with him. Toru informs Hsin Lien that he is being transferred to Hong Kong, and she replies that she is engaged to Ing Ming, a pupil of her father's. In Hong Kong, Kanako reveals to Toru that no such engagement exists, and Toru rushes off to Singapore, where Hsin Lien has gone to ease the pain of her decision. Hsin Lien accepts Toru's proposal of marriage, but her father dies before they can marry. Hsin Lien cancels the wedding to take over his work, and Toru is transferred to San Francisco.
