Once a legendary figure along the race tracks, Jim Mason becomes a down-and-out drunk after a crooked race results in the death of his favorite horse and jockey. One day, while stealing a ride on a railroad car carrying horses, he meets Goldie, a stableboy, and the two become fast friends. Goldie weans Mason from the whiskey bottle and encourages him to regain his former position in racing. Through a technicality at a public auction, Goldie and Mason buy a horse for two dollars, and with the skillful training of the old master and riding of Goldie, the steed is nurtured into a winner. Their winning streak attracts the attention of a crooked bookie ring, which tries to persuade the boy to play along with them. Meanwhile, the boy's mother, Eve Barnes, comes to reclaim her runaway son, and Mason recognizes her as his ex-wife and realizes that Goldie is actually his own son. Eve convinces Mason that the track will destroy Goldie, and to force the boy to return home, Mason pretends that he again has succumbed to the temptations of gambling and whiskey. He makes Goldie promise to throw the big race, but the youngster's love for his horse prevents him from losing. After winning the race, Goldie returns home, never realizing that the crooked gambler named Mason is his self-sacrificing father.
