On the Pont des Arts in Paris, the wealthy and beautiful Frédérique meets Why, a poor bohemian of vague origin trying to eke out a living by chalking does, her favorite subject, on sidewalks. Finding her attractive, Frédérique drops a bill at Why's feet, brings her to her apartment, seduces her, and takes her to her villa in Saint-Tropez, where their leisurely life is interrupted only by the antics of Robčgue and Riais, two homosexual parasite-buffoons whom Frédérique finds amusing. At a party given by Frédérique, Why is drawn to Paul Thomas, a successful architect, and leaves the party with him. They are followed by the two parasites, who, under Frédérique's orders, watch from a distance as Paul makes love to the virginal Why. Irritated at Paul's intrusion, Frédérique visits him, and in spite of herself falls in love with him. Paul, who only considered his relationship with Why a passing affair, returns Frédérique's love. They drive to Paris, leaving Why to put up with Robčgue and Riais at the villa. Upon their return, Frédérique is still unwilling to give up Why and asks her to remain when Paul moves in. The parasites scheme to get rid of the male intruder, but their machinations are suspected by Frédérique, and they are expelled from the villa. Despite her emotional uncertainty, Why mutely accepts her position, though it is Paul and Frédérique who retire to the bedroom each night. One morning Why finds a note saying that Paul and Frédérique have gone to Paris, and she follows them and goes to Frédérique's apartment. Discovering Frédérique alone, Why confesses in a jealous, love-hate outburst of feelings her need of both Frédérique and Paul. When Frédérique tells Why that she finds her love repulsive and orders her from the house, Why stabs Frédérique with a poisoned dagger. She telephones Paul, pretending to be Frédérique, and invites him to the apartment. When he arrives Why is waiting for him dressed in Frédérique's clothes.
