Having squandered his fortune in the pursuit of pleasure, the Marquis d'Argenville finds that he is unable to pay his staff or his creditors. To recoup their money, the creditors decide to incorporate the marquis and have him sign an agreement to wed heiress Gwendolyn Gruger, the daughter of a wealthy American sausage maker. Their plan goes awry, however, when the marquis falls in love with Gwendolyn's poor companion, Peggy Winton.
