In an Irish village in 1899, Ellen McHugh's husband is killed in a storm. Convinced that America holds the best future for her son, Brian, she immigrates, only to face discouragement until Terrence O'Dowd induces her to join a sideshow, posing as a "half-woman." Brian is placed in a fashionable school, but when his mother's profession is discovered, the principal forces Ellen to surrender the boy legally into his care. She becomes a housekeeper in the Fifth Avenue home of the Cuttings and rears her employer's daughter, Edith. Years later, Edith and Brian meet and fall in love, on the eve of war; eventually the boy and his mother are reunited, and all ends happily.
