When Margy Dexter, an aspiring singer, is mistaken for a recently released con artist in a nightclub run by Marty Davis, a gangster jewel thief, she inadvertently witnesses an argument between Davis and Buzz Austin and becomes a suspect in Buzz's subsequent murder. Convinced that Margy is not the clean-cut working girl that she claims to be, the police assign Pete Cooper and his partner, Riley, to watch her while they impersonate club musicians. Davis, afraid that his enemies will harm Margy, his only believable alibi, orders his dim-witted henchman, Gashouse, to be her bodyguard until the trial. To the displeasure of her roommate, Flo Bradley, Gashouse moves in with Margy and follows her every day to the insurance company where she and Flo work as secretaries. Pete's initial attempts at ingratiating himself with Margy, which involve a faked kidnapping and rescue, meet with little success, but eventually she warms up to his charms and accepts his invitations. In the meantime, the jewel heists continue, and neither Pete nor Riley are able to decipher Davis' coded messages to the jewel fencers, which appear in the personal ads of the daily newspaper. As he and Margy spend more time together, Pete finds himself falling in love, and after yet another jewel robbery, his superior takes him off the case. Pete, however, discovers microphones hidden in lamps at the nightclub tables and convinces his boss to plant a party of apparently jewel rich people in the club. As expected, Davis falls for the scheme, and his men are caught in the subsequent robbery attempt. After a rooftop fight, during which Margy is taken hostage, Pete overcomes Davis and wins a promotion and Margy's hand in marriage.
