Out All Night

In New York, widow Jane Colgate mollycoddles her grown son Ronald, convincing him he is suffering from one illness after another. When she takes him to buy a coat in Stacey's Department Store, he wanders into the nursery, where he meets nurse Bunny and falls in love. A week later, Ronald finally drums up enough nerve to ask Bunny out on a date, but his mother insists on chaperoning him. The next night, Ronald visits Bunny at the store at closing time, and the two get locked into the "Love Nest" display in the furniture department after Ronald proposes. The next morning, Mrs. Colgate is mortified to find Bunny in the Love Nest bed and Ronald asleep on the floor. Ostensibly to prevent a scandal, but really to cut Ronald's apron strings, Mrs. Colgate's ardent suitor, David Arnold, suggests the couple marry immediately. Bunny and Ronald, who are both grossly inexperienced with the opposite sex, nervously board the train for Niagara Falls. While Bunny waits in the upper berth for Ronald to join her, he gets drunk with Henry, a fellow passenger traveling with his wife who holds tickets to the newlyweds' rooms. When Henry gets in the lower berth, Bunny thinks her bridegroom is ignoring her. Ronald, meanwhile, helps Henry's wife remove her stockings, believing she is Bunny. After the porter checks the tickets, Ronald and Bunny are forced to spend the night in the porter's compartment playing checkers. When the weary, affection-starved couple arrives in Niagara Falls, mother Colgate greets them, holding Ronald's medicine, and gets an adjoining room. Unable to consummate her marriage because of Mrs. Colgate's pampering, Bunny leaves. Back in New York, while Ronald "convalesces," Mrs. Colgate sends David to make the financial arrangements with Bunny for a divorce. Instead, David sets up a scheme with Bunny's roommate, Kate, and her boyfriend, Jerry, a tour bus driver in Chinatown. Jerry's friends, dressed up as thugs, abduct Bunny on a street corner just as David takes Ronald and his mother out for a walk. To save Bunny, Ronald defies his mother for the first time in his life, leaps from his wheelchair and races after the "kidnappers," who scare Bunny into believing she will be their white slave. In Chinatown, a phony brutish Chinese man cuts Bunny's clothing and pretends to whip and knife her while Ronald makes his way into the building. After a lengthy chase meant to test his mettle, Ronald eventually knocks the assailants out, then carries Bunny over his shoulder to Kate and Jerry, who wait in a car. Mrs. Colgate follows in a panic, but Ronald gives her his medicine and tells her defiantly that he is returning to Niagara Falls with his wife. In their hotel room, the happy couple wakes to discover they have been in bed for three days.
