Bo Gillman, a cattle rustler in the guise of a respectable rancher, shoots and kills Sam Osborne when the old man sees him stealing the Circle S cattle. In Osborne's possessions, Gillman finds a letter that the murdered man sent to the Cattlemen's Investigative Association, requesting that a detective be sent. Consequently, when Steve Logan, a stranger, appears headed toward the Osborne ranch, Gillman suspects that Steve is the detective and accuses him of Osborne's murder. Arrested and jailed, Steve is visited by attorney Virgil Parker, who is Gillman's partner in the rustling operation. Parker is accompanied by his secretary, Mary Curtis, Steve's old sweetheart, who warns him that Gillman and Parker are behind the rustling. To eliminate Steve, Gillman stirs up a lynch mob, but Steve escapes before they can storm the jail. Meanwhile, at the Circle S, Osborne's daughter Helen learns that the ranch is facing bankruptcy, prompting her loyal ranch hand Joe Bushberry to volunteer to work for free. Later that night, Steve arrives at the ranch, and Helen offers him refuge. Steve learns from Mansfield, the railroad representative, that the railroad has purchased the right of way through the Osborne land from Parker and Gillman, who claim that they control it. Armed with this information, Steve tells the sheriff that he is a cattle detective and enlists his aid in apprehending Parker. The two then lay an ambush for Gillman's men, and together bring the gang to justice.
