Prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Brooklynites Tommy Jones and Eddie Dolan buy an island in the South Pacific and turn it into a tourist trap. Tommy pretends to be "Chief Atamu," while Eddie impersonates a beachcomber and rounds up customers for native shows, which Tommy puts on with the help of the local inhabitants. The two hope to sell the island for a hefty profit, then return to the States, and repay Eddie's fiancée, Susie Dugan, the $500 they borrowed to purchase the island. One day, millionaire meat-packer Holton arrives on the island with his wife and daughter Joan, and immediately agrees to buy the island for $10,000. Before the deal can be finalized, however, a group of cannibals from a neighboring island invades and captures all the natives. Tommy, though, mistakes the invaders for the local natives and immediately becomes friends with the cannibal chief, Nataro. In the meantime, the Holtons, along with Eddie and Susie, who has just arrived at the island to marry Eddie, are taken prisoner. Susie becomes irate when she discovers that Eddie has unwittingly become romantically entangled with a beautiful island girl named Luani. Joan, who had previously fallen in love with Tommy, learns about his deceit and blames him for her family's predicament. Tommy, however, convinces his new friend Nataro to release his friends, but the cannibal chief does so on the condition that they immediately leave the island. Upon their release, Mrs. Holton, Joan and Susie, for romantic and sentimental reasons, refuse to go, while both Mr. Holton and Susie argue over who is the actual owner of the island. Chief Nataro settles all the bickering by uniting Susie and Eddie, and Joan and Tommy, and marrying them in a native ceremony. He then makes the surprising decree that the two newlywed couples, the Holtons and their friends may remain on the island in safety and peace.
