S.O.S. Iceberg

At a banquet at the International Society for Arctic Research, the members toast Dr. Carl Lawrence, a scientist who will be following the same route taken by the famed explorer Wegener's ill-fated expedition. Lawrence's team consists of two scientists, Dr. Johannes Brand and Dr. Jan Matushek, his friend, Fritz Kuemmel, their financial backer, John Dragan, and their pilot to the Arctic, Lawrence's wife Ellen. After Ellen drops them at their base camp, the men begin their long trek to recover Wegener's records and prove his theories on ice floes. As the weeks pass, Brand and the others fear that they will meet Wegener's fate if they push on farther, but Lawrence discounts the danger of the ice breaking up and refuses to wait until winter. Early one morning, Lawrence takes some supplies and goes on alone. He is followed by his companions, who fear that he is lost. Dragan, the only inexperienced member of the team, has had his fill of the adventure he has bought and wishes to turn back, but Brand insists on finding Lawrence. As they press on, they find a hut Wegener occupied and a note from Lawrence saying that he is risking crossing the fjords to reach an Eskimo village. The team hesitates, as Brand compares crossing the ice to crossing a field of dynamite, but Matushek points out that they must go straight ahead, as they do not have enough food to go around. On their way, their sleds of food supplies are lost in a ravine, and the break up of the ice forces them to take refuge on a huge iceberg. They soon discover that Lawrence is also on the iceberg, and Brand begins sending out an S.O.S. on his wireless. Their desperate cry for help reaches Ellen, who immediately leaves to search for her husband. Meanwhile, the deprivation warps Dragan's mind, and Kuemmel falls off the iceberg to his death as he struggles with Dragan to save their faithful dog Nakinak from Dragan's hunger. The survivors are soon cheered by the sight of Ellen's plane, but she misjudges her landing and crashes. She swims to the iceberg, where she comforts Lawrence. Brand calculates that they are four miles from the village, and knowing that they are drifting out to sea, he dives into the water, hoping he has enough strength to make the journey. Another pilot attempting to trace Ellen's route spots the heroic Brand, and after picking him up, goes to the Eskimo village. While a rescue party is being organized, Matushek spots two polar bears fighting over a seal. He tries to get the meat, but his puny spear is no match for the bears, and he is killed. Dragan then attacks Ellen, but is stopped by Lawrence, who is finally roused from his stupor and comes to her defense. Just then, the mighty iceberg can no longer withstand the pressures within and from the sea, and it begins to break apart. Dragan plummets into swirling water, but Lawrence, Ellen and Nakinak are rescued by the Eskimos. Later, the survivors of the mission are on a ship bound for home, and a haunted Lawrence insists that his departed companions have not died in vain.
