Betrothed as a child to Baron Badeau, Fidele Tridon, daughter of a wealthy New Orleans importer, finds herself in love with Philip Collett on the day the baron comes to claim her as his bride. The baron refuses to release her, and she plans to elope with Philip. The baron tricks Philip into a duel; Philip wounds him in the arm and is sent to jail. Fidele marries the baron to free Philip but flees to her lover after the ceremony. Finding her gone, the baron is stricken with paralysis, and Fidele returns to nurse her husband. The baron recovers after a year, but conceals this fact from his wife lest he lose her. On the night of the Mardi Gras ball he dresses as a jester and is mistaken by Fidele for Philip. She reveals to him that she is aware that her husband is faking; and when the baron's valet enters disguised as his master, she offers the valet a choice of two glasses of water, one of which contains poison. The baron, realizing that he has lost Fidele, gives her her freedom, and Fidele comes into her rightful love.
