Vagabond Mary Smith is about to be convicted in court when wealthy Englishman Jimmie Martin, who is drunk and is a total stranger to Mary, promises to marry her to keep her out of jail. Mary takes her marriage seriously, despite Jimmie's mother's attempts to introduce him to more suitable women, and tries to cure Jimmie of his drinking, but he adamantly remains drunk. When his friend Jack Haines takes an interest in Mary, Jimmie is resentful but powerless, and although Jack is promised to someone of equal social standing, Mary goes to Reno to get a divorce. After Mary gives birth to Jimmie's child, her friend Nellie brings she and Jimmie together, and this time they are united by love.
