Steve Barrett and Tiny Baldwin, foremen of the Diamond Arrow and Flying W ranches, respectively, decide to solve a manpower shortage by having their ranch hands live together at the Diamond Arrow. After Tiny's boys threaten to return to the Flying W because of the inedible food prepared by Diamond Arrow cooks Slim and Judy, Steve advertises for a new cook. Consequently, when out-of-work entertainers Penny Morrow and Addie LaTour appear at the ranch, Steve mistakes them for cooks. In reality, Addie is answering a marriage proposal she received in the mail from a man named Northrup Bayless, a member of a Lonely Hearts club, and Penny has come to chaperone her. After being welcomed by the boys, Penny and Addie are rushed into the kitchen. Although their first efforts are disastrous, Tiny still thinks that they are cooks and tries to hire them for the Flying W. That night, cowhands woo the women with songs, and Penny finds herself attracted to Steve while Addie is drawn to Slim. In the middle of the songfest, Doreen Nesbitt, the absentee owner of the Diamond Arrow, arrives from New York and evinces a romantic interest in Steve. Impressed by Penny's singing abilities, Steve asks her to perform with the Diamond Arrow boys at the upcoming Frontier Celebration and explains that the $3,000 awarded to the winner of the singing contest would enable him to buy the ranch from Doreen. Penny agrees, but when Judy, incensed at being replaced by the new arrivals, shows Steve evidence that Penny and Adele are professional entertainers, Steve thinks he has been double-crossed because professionals are barred from the contest. When Steve accuses Penny of betrayal, she angrily announces her intentions to leave town and drives off in the buckboard with Addie. Realizing that he has fallen in love with Penny, Steve follows and rescues them after their horses bolt. Penny and Addie remain adamant about leaving, but discover that they must wait three weeks for the next bus. During that period, Steve and Penny reconcile, and when the Frontier Celebration opens, Slim remembers a rule that would allow Penny to enter the contest if she is engaged to Steve. After announcing her engagement, Penny joins Steve and his ranch hands in song and they win the contest. All ends happily when Addie learns that the mysterious Northrup Bayless is none other than Slim, and Tiny and Doreen become attracted to each other.
