Alec Carson, son of an embittered old Arizona sheepherder, marries Dolores, a Mexican dance hall girl, and takes her to the ranch, which is suffering from a drought. Carson strongly resents the girl's intrusion and tries to make his son doubt her fidelity; soon her nerves become strained from the old man's insults and her husband's failure to stand up for her. Sam Randall, a nomadic sheepherder, comes to the ranch looking for work, and Carson hires him when he notes Randall's inclination to flirt with Dolores. Alec, made suspicious by his father, quarrels with his wife, and they part in anger, Alec sleeping in the bunkhouse. That night, Randall sneaks into the girl's bedroom. The following morning, Carson declares he caught the guilty couple and killed Randall; Dolores refuses Alec an explanation because of his lack of faith in her. Destroying the evidence of her innocence, she throws the gun with which she shot Randall into a mud hole and walks away to freedom.
