1. | The Beach | Naz Khan (Riz Ahmed) is in a university physics class.He watches others play basketball, in locker room the player he is tutoring and another invite him to a party downtown on Stanton Street. There will be 'mad' females there.He gets out of a cab in Jackson Heights and goes into a family clothing store. The cab is his father's. At dinner Naz and his brother talk sports. His mom (Poorna Jagannathan) is not happy he is going to a party downtown. Outside the house he finds out his friend is bailing out, he has no ride. Anxious to go, he takes his father's taxi keys and drives off. It is 24 Oct 2014.He drives through a tollbooth and is videoed. He asks another cab for directions, He has trouble finding the switch for the off-duty light. Stopping at an intersection two men jump in, he tells them to leave. A cop car notices, helps him get rid of the two, and gives him directions to Stanton St. Before he can drive off an attractive young woman (Sofia Black-D'Elia) gets in the cab. Once again he tries to get her to leave, but then agrees to take her to the "river" uptown.She's thirsty and asks for a drink. He stops at a gas station and buys a beer and water. While Naz is inside a hearse driver fuelling up gets upset the girl tossed a cigarette from the cab. Naz is puzzled at the man's glare as he returns. The station video records the scene.Sipping the beer the girl makes small talk. Naz explains it is father's cab and he was going to a party. Near a bridge they sit and watch the river and lights and chat. She offers him a pill, he refuses politely, she takes it with her beer. Depressed, she tells him she can't be alone tonight. Naz sighs and takes the pill offered. They drive to her house. Parking the car, two men make a racist comment as they pass them on the sidewalk. One of the men stares at them intently as Naz and the girl go inside the house.Inside Naz notices a cat and needs to take a puff on an inhaler. She puts the cat out, then makes tequila and lime drinks. They down shooters, play with a kitchen knife stabbing the table between fingers and snort cocaine. He cuts her hand with the knife, the two start kissing and go upstairs to the bedroom.Waking some time later in the kitchen, Naz gathers his senses, he goes upstairs to get dressed. Turning on the lights he notices the girl is dead from many stab wounds, blood is everywhere. Gasping in shock, He hurriedly tries to leave, runs to the taxi outside, realizes he left his jacket and car keys back in the house. The door is locked, he has to break the glass and unlock the door. He cuts his hand on the broken glass. A neighbor across the street watches him. He finds his keys and takes the knife they were playing with. He takes some red tickets off the windshield and drives off quickly, nearly causing an accident.At a red light a motorcycle comes beside, the rider appears to notice the bloody knife on the dashboard. At 1:36am a police patrol car pulls him over for making an illegal left turn. The Officer Wiggins (Afton Williamson) suspects Naz was drinking and asks him to blow into a breathalyzer. The partner, Officer Maldonado, gets a call and says they have to go. Kaz puts a bloody handprint on the taxi. Wiggins refuses to let him go and takes Naz with them, leaving the taxi. The cops drive back to the street Naz just left and they park outside the house.The neighbor tells the cops about the man leaving the house and taking a cab. The two cops slowly approach the house. A supervisor arrives with others and the five uniformed cops enter the house announcing their presence. Naz watches them nervously in the patrol car back seat. The neighbor/witness looks over at him. The sergeant comes out and Maldonado is puking, they call for full backup. Homicide Detective Sergeant Danny Box (Bill Camp) is called in by the Night Watch.Naz watches a Crime Scene Unit arrive. Det. Box arrives and gets updated, he notices Naz sitting in the backseat, and orders the uniforms to take him to the station and release him. Naz is taken to the station by other cops.The detectives photograph the dead body. At the station Naz is told to sit and watches the usual riff raff of a night shift come and go. He checks his phone, too nervous to call anyone. He also has the knife in a pocket of his jacket.Det. Box hears from the CSU tech the murder weapon is a large knife, 1-1.5" blade. Outside, one of the men who confronted Naz is asking what happened.The neigbor/witness is also brought in to the station and sits near Naz.Naz's brother Hasan notices he is missing and wakes their father.The sidewalk man talks to Det. Box and says the man with the girl was a muslim. Det. Box orders the man taken in also.Naz's phone buzzes, Home is calling but he ignores it. Mr. Khan phones Naz's friend and asks about the party. Mrs. Khan wakes also.Detective Box arrives at the station. The desk sergeant finally notices Naz, the police realize after two hours it is too late for a breathalyzer. Before letting him go Wiggins pats Naz down carefully. The cop finds the bloody knife. In a panic Naz tries to escape. The man from the sidewalk is just coming in and identifies Naz as the guy with the girl.The cops watch him sit in an interrogation room. Det. Sgt. Box comes in to talk and is friendly and asks what happened. The girl's name was Andrea Cornish.Naz is processed, has to take his clothes off and is photographed and fingerprinted. His back is scratched and they see his cut left palm.The two witnesses are getting upset at having to wait.Det. Box asks for permission and Naz allows the police to take mouth and penile swabs for DNA evidence.Naz asks for a lawyer but the fingerprint guys say they can't do anything. In the station a shabby legal aid lawyer, John Stone, notices Naz in a holding cell. He thinks about it then returns. He hears two CSU guys argue with the Desk Sergeant about chain of custody, and tells the desk sergeant he is Naz's lawyer.In the cell with Naz, Stone asks a few questions about Naz's background. He warns Naz not to talk to any police any more.Det. Box gets a signed statement from the neighbor and lets him go.At 6am Wiggins and Maldonado are finishing their reports and have done 5 hrs overtime. A detective says they can't leave and must come upstairs.The sidewalk witness, Trevor, id's Naz from a group of photos for Det. Box.John Stone still doesn't know exactly what Naz is suspected of doing. The Desk Sergeant reveals it is a murder case. Stone is stunned when he realizes Det. Box is involved.Naz finally phones home and tells his father he is at a police station for murder. Mr. Khan runs outside and notices his taxi is missing. více |

2. | Subtle Beast | Still the day after the murder. Naz recalls his time with Andrea.Officer Wiggins explains to a Detective what they did with Naz, and that he was quiet as a mouse.John Stone comes to visit Naz in jail. The lawyer tells him again to stop trying to explain what happened, he doesn't have to from a legal defense viewpoint.Naz's family leaves their house to look for him.Det. Box calls Andrea's step father, the next of kin. In the murder house there is still evidence being collected. Box walks around, the body is still on the bed. An asthma inhaler is marked as 39 on the corner of the bed.Stone explains to Naz that Box is a good, thorough cop but stretches the rules.Finally the body is bagged and removed. A media reporter tries to get Box to provide names and details.Leaving, Stone once again tells Naz not to talk to anyone.Andrea is autopsied. Her step father, Don Taylor, waits in a corridor. After a wait he is brought in to see another official. The coroner's rep shows him two photos to select one. Another cop watches. Taylor selects Andrea's photo.Stone picks at his scaly foot with a chopstick on the subway, to the disgust of others. He is late for court.The Khans go to the wrong precinct, but the desk sergeant finds out and directs them to the '21'.Stone empties his overcoat pockets of a lot of junk but still sets off the metal scanner at the courthouse security.Taylor is in a daze and signs a form at the coroner's, he leaves but Det. Box is there.In court, Stone has a young client and they wait their turn.The Khans show up at the 21 but can't see Naz as he is 23 yrs old. The sergeant is brusque and dismissive. They decide to wait.Box and Taylor chat in a coffee shop. Taylor says that Andrea had been in police trouble before, her mother died last year, the father was dead a few years. No job no school, not sure if she wasn't a prostitute. Taylor doesn't recognize Naz or recall the name. He lives in Queens, the house was Andrea's mother's.Stone's client is sentenced to three years upstate, they leave the judge quickly.The Khans sit quietly until Box arrives. He lets them visit with Naz in a private room. Naz tells them he was with the girl but fell asleep. Box listens and watches on the CCTV. Naz switches to Urdu and says he has a lawyer but can't remember Stone's name. After awhile, Box comes in to say time's up.Stone meets Box at the precinct vending machines. They taunt each other. Stone then introduces himself to the Khans. He explains Naz has not been charged yet and tells them to go home. Later, Stone is angry with Naz, he tells him Box recorded his talk with his parents.The cops tease Stone and they trade barbs. Box chats to a silent Naz. He tries to downgrade Stone and says the lawyer is only in it for the money. Box only wants the truth. He says he has an open and shut case and gives Naz his asthma inhaler. Box seems friendly and tries to get Naz to open up. Naz ends the conversation politely.Box gives Naz his clothes back, Naz is taken away in a paddy wagon. Box gets in his car, it is after dark. Stone goes home by subway. The Khans are silent at their dinner table. Stone spreads topical cream on his feet at his apartment. The police van arrives at a large secure facility, Naz and the other prisoners are led downstairs. It is dark and wet. Other prisoners are yelling in the distance. The prisoners are told to empty their pockets, they are scanned with metal detectors. Another man is trying to hide a cellphone in his underwear. In a holding cell a scared young man cries and vomits , Naz tries to sit quietly. The crying man is beaten up by another. Stone thinks in silence, in the morning he chats with his teenage son about schoolwork. The ex-wife arrives to give a ride, she seems incredulous Stone has a murder client, then apologizes for her reaction.In court the DA is briefed on the case and requests Box. The Khan taxi is dusted and processed, Box comes by to see what they have. They find some postcards of an Islamic imam, Box recognizes the obscure portrait and briefly explains the 17th century roots of the Shi'ite Sunni factions.At the Khans a group of police come with a court order and search the house. They takeover Naz's room and also take the Khan's desktop computer, to their dismay.Stone calls the Khans and tells them the arraignment will be later today and where to come.Box explains the case to the DA. She tests Box but the Detective convinces her they won't lose.In the court Stone waits with the Khans. Case 4362 is called. Naz pleads Not Guilty to Murder in the 1st Degree and a number of lesser charges. An ADA requests remand as Naz is a Pakistani and a flight risk. Stone responds that Naz is an American, the case is circumstantial, but the judge refuses bail.Naz is once again taken away, in a armoured bus to Riker's Island. více |

3. | A Dark Crate | At Riker's Island, cop fills out a form with Naz. She asks if he is gay, on drugs, suicidal or a gang member. No to all, she wishes him luck.Box grills the arresting cops, Wiggins and Maldonado, already prepping them for trial. Nasir Khan is a clean cut college kid, the jury may sympathize.Stone talks to an ADA in the men's washroom, fishing for how strong the case is. The ADA says it will be a quick trial.Stone briefs the Khans and warns them the trial may be a long one and Naz is facing life imprisonment. They begin to discuss fees, Stone says he will charge a flat fee of $75,000 if the case goes to trial. The Khans don't have that kind of cash, even with a $60,000 offer they say they can't afford him. Stone warns them about Legal Aid (lawyers like himself), then they agree on $55,000 , Stone leaves a template retainer for them to read and sign.A man is taken from his jail cell, a clipping refers to him as the 'King of Queens'Naz undergoes further processing in the jail. He watches a female guard take a prisoner away, they go to have sex in a utility room, after, as she counts some cash, she says it will be too risky to continue. Another cop reads Naz and his group the riot act. Naz is led to a cot in a large open area.The DA discusses the case with a superior, he tells her to act quickly. She dismisses Stone as a precinct trawler. Stone meets with DA and compares the case to Jody Arias. They chat and Stone proposes manslaughter. She tells him to buy a new suit, not brown.Salim meets his friends in a cafe, They ask about the shared cab as they are losing money now. Outside, Salim is covertly photographed.A man in the bunk next to Naz warns him to keep his head down and shut up. The King of Queens watches them.Det. Box looks at childhood photos of Naz. A doctor looks at Stone's feet, they are worse because Stone has applied Paco Rabanne cologne and is having an allergic reaction. The doctor says to wrap his feet in Crisco and Saran Wrap.A slick female lawyer has a press conference, she is representing a flight attendant in an unlawful dismissal lawsuit.The Khans go to visit Nasir at Riker's. Only one ticket per person is allowed. A female cop physically searches Safar even inside her bra. Now, Naz tells his parents what happened that night, but says he never killed Andrea. Salim tries to reassure Naz.At a televised press conference a media rep explains the case to a crowd of reporters. The prisoners in jail watch. The slick lawyer watches, the Pakistanis watch. Stone gets a moment to rebut and tells the TV audience Naz is as American as baseball.In jail a group of men approach Naz and ask if he raped the girl. A guard approaches and gives him black sneakers, a gift from 'Freddy'. Naz showers with the shoes on, then is all alone with his thoughts.The Pakistanis try to get their cab but the impound cop tells them to get a lawyer, that the state will sue them to keep the car, and he suggests they have Naz charged with Grand Theft Auto in order to get the car back. Salim is stunned. The cop gives them a John Stone business card.Stone covers his feet with the Crisco. He goes to the murder house and is let in, he photos the bloody bedroom. He sees the cat outside and lets it in. Stone pours the cat some milk, then the animal curls up at his feet.The Muslim call to prayer sounds out in the jail. The slick lawyer finds an Indian junior lawyer and goes to the Khans. She puts down Stone as inexperienced and asks if they signed a retainer, they haven't yet. She offers to take the case for nothing.At a help group other men with foot problems share their stories. One announces he has started dating. John jokes around with the others.The prisoners watch TV, Naz notices the King of Queens offer him a cell phone, Naz shakes his head, no.Stone buys clothes and socks at a street vendor.Naz and his father talk on a landline, the elder says they are switching lawyers. Naz is puzzled as he likes Mr. Stone. John goes to visit Naz and gives him the clothes. He updates Naz who stops him, saying they have a new lawyer Alison Crowe (Glenne Headley). Stone pretends to understand, leaves his card, then Naz is taken back to the cells.Naz goes to Crowe's office and meets Chandra Kapoor (Amara Karan). He accuses them of stealing his client and insults Chandra for being used as a prop. Sadly he walks down a street and looks wistfully at new shoes in a shop window. Walking by the murder house he sees the informal candle shrine for Andrea and apologizes to the mewing cat for ot being able to look after it - he is also allergic.A guard takes Naz to see Freddy (Michael Kenneth Williams). A gang leader, the King of Queens, has a private cell with many amenities. He tells a puzzled Naz an elliptical story about family and the 'hood. Freddy warns Naz the other prison Muslims hate him, and the others dislike him as a rapist. He has Naz close his eyes and touch a piece of raw veal, joking it was a heart. Freddy offers his protection. The guard takes Naz back to his bed. The other prisoner asks what Freddy wanted, Naz says he refused the offer.Stone brings the cat to an animal shelter, if not taken by someone it will be put down in 10 days.At night Naz goes for a pee, back in the sleeping area he sees his bed in flames, the other prisoners glare at him and make threatening gestures. více |

4. | The Art of War | Naz watches as the remnants of his burned cot is taken away. His cot mate bundles up his own stuff and moves away leaving Naz on his own.John Stone wraps his feet in Crisco and Saran Wrap. He answers his phone, a new client is calling from a precinct.A crowd of media gather outside the Khan's house.At the Riker's Commissary another prisoner asks for, and Naz lets him, use his credit card to buy some items. Another prisoner, Calvin Hurt, tells Naz he has to be tougher and not be a soft touch, and to learn a proper prison stare.Stone hears out his new client, a young man who killed someone with scissors. The young man says he can't remember doing it. Stone is pensive, then leaves the 21st Precinct. He goes to Andrea's funeral, tries to talk to two of Andrea's friends but Det. Box interrupts them. The girls leave, Stone suggests even Box wants to know what really happened. From a distance Stone sees Don Taylor argue with a younger man, he videos them with his phone. In a church, he reviews the photos on his phone, a photo of a photo of Andrea leads him to a specific street , and a discreet sign, Invictus House.Calvin tells Naz to work out in the gym but to be careful when selecting a weight bench. Calvin also warns Naz against getting close to Freddy, who looks at them balefully from across the gym.Stone photos the Invictus House from across the street. A supervisor and assistant approach him and tell him he has to go away, he is invading privacy. Stone makes up a story about having a son who needs rehab, but walks away.In a high school Naz' brother is bruised from fighting. A vice principal asks the Khans to withdraw the boy, they wonder how he can keep up his studies.Down the street the Invictus Assistant catches up to Stone and offers to photo Andrea's file for $350.In jail Calvin explains anything can be a weapon. He explains the hot water for cup noodles can be mixed with baby oil to make a napalm-like material.The DA reviews the murder book.In court Stone convinces a judge to release a hooker, he arranges a date for later. In the hallway he meets Chandra Kapoor and shows her the photocopied Cornish file. Andrea was in rehab three times in two years. He suggests Chandra get the same info by subpoena and sells her the file for $500. He gives her his card.Naz is in jail wearing an orange jumpsuit, a guard brings him blue coveralls to wear instead, from Freddy.Outside the courthouse, Stone watches as Alison Crowe, Det. Box and the Khans arrive to a media frenzy. Alison introduces herself to Naz in a holding pen, she tells him to trust her, and gives him a comb to straighten his hair. She smiles and is glad he is not wearing orange.Stone enters the courtroom and takes a seat behind the DA, they greet each other cordially, she is there to observe. Naz pleads Not Guilty to the Grand Jury Indictment, Alison tries to have him released on bail, using the same arguements Stone used earlier. During the back and forth Alison insults John Stone. Naz is sent back to jail, the DA turns and says Crowe's comments were uncalled for. Outside, Alison has a testy media standup, and is rude to Samir Khan for speaking.Back at Rikers Naz is slashed in the left arm while walking in, he makes his own bandage from the bed sheets. He goes to the guard to see Freddy. Up in Freddy's cell, Naz finds out the orange suit means violent offender and could sway the judge. Naz notices a High School Diploma on Freddy's wall, the King of Queens liked school and seems proud of the real diploma. He then gives Naz paperback copy of 'Call of the Wild' by Jack London, the story will help him survive in jail. Naz replies he has already read it. Freddy jokes about the weak intelligence of his entourage and says Naz has to ask him for help.Stone and the prostitute have sex at his flat. She goes to the washroom after and is disgusted by his medicines and Itch-X creme.Naz and Calvin talk quietly on their cots. Calvin explains his crime, he had killed the wrong man in trying to avenge his neice's murder. He shows a photo of the women, a bloody crime scene shot.Chandra watches Alison in action at the office.The DAs discuss a NY Post tabloid with a "Sikhing Revenge" title, a red-turban man on the cover had been murdered in Brooklyn. The DA is told to act quickly on Naz.Stone visits another doctor for his bloody feet. He writes a new cortico-steroid prescription, a script for a UV lamp, and says to go buy Chlorox bleach. Stone is incredulous.Freddy boxes another prisoner, angry that the other man has no cell phone for him. Freddy is brutal and knocks him out, Naz watches.The DA and Crowe negotiate a plea, they settle on 15 years, manslaughter one.A pharmacist is surprised Stone has a script for 20 mg corticosteroids. He jokes about the side affects of such a strong creme and says Stone could hit 70 homers in baseball.Alison explains she can try, if lucky, to get a deal with the DA for 15 years and manslaughter instead of life and murder 1. Naz wants to think about it and asks about Chandra. Back at his cot he finds a copy of Sidney Sheldon's 'The Other Side of Midnite" with a 'take the deal' yellow post it note. Freddy looks down on him from the mezzanine.The Khans get a phone call, Samir tells his wife Alison has told Naz to take a plea bargain.In a stairwell Det Box is upset the DA is not going to trial, she says she has a boss just like him.Stone has a beer in a bar, another patron who knows him tells him he heard there is a deal in the works for Naz.Calvin and Naz discuss the offer.Once again Naz is taken to the Courthouse, Alison asks if he is ready, as Naz is a little hesitant she leaves and sends in Chandra to convince him. Naz asks her frankly what she would do in his situation, she says he should take the deal if he killed her but don't if he didn't. In the courtroom, Stone comes up to Naz and says to take the deal, he'll be out in 12 years and only 35 years old. The judge then arrives and has the DA take Naz through the process. After recounting his story the DA asks if he killed Andrea, Naz refuses to admit it. The judge, Alison and DA get very upset at the wasted day.In the backroom cell Alison is furious and curses him out, Naz tells her to quit. Crowe agrees and storms out. At he Khan's house she explains that her firm could still stay on the case but Chandra would take over and it would not be pro bono anymore and will be a long trial, they were free to find an other lawyer.In the bar, Stone calls the animal shelter and finds out Andrea Cornish's cat is still there,Back at Riker's Calvin seems upset Naz did not take the deal, he stirs a hot mug, then quickly squirts in some baby lotion and splashes Naz. Naz is able to protect his face but his arm is burned. As he is being bandaged he refuses to tell the guard who did it. Once again Naz requests a visit with Freddy, he now asks for help. Freddy takes a drag of his smoke. více |

5. | The Season of the Witch | John Stone shines UV light on his feet. Then he lectures, his kid's school class, on what he does as a defense attorney. The students are not impressed, and later his son is embarrassed by the show.Freddy shows Naz to his new private cell on the mezzanine floor.Chandra Kapoor is waiting when John gets to his apartment. Kapoor needs help, he suggests $50,000, she offers $20,000. They settle on $30,000.The DA and her team brainstorm the defense strategy. The drugs are an issue.Kapoor says they found ketamine in Naz's pockets and is puzzled. Stone explains it is an aphrodisiac before it knocks a person out.Det. Box tells the DA he is retiring after 33 years. Before he leaves, she asks him to trace Naz's steps that night, he agrees.The Pakistanis ask Samir to charge Naz with GTA to get the taxi back.Naz is taken from his cell. In the showers Freddy is there with a nude and bloody Calvin. Naz gives him a kick in the stomach, then a few more, and kicks and punches to the head, until he is pulled off.Stone retrieves Andrea's cat, and takes it with thick rubber gloves.Box carefully logs times, checks cell records and finds video of Naz moving through the City. He draws the path on a street map of Manhattan.Stone brings the cat home and prepares canned food, then locks it in a bedroom.Box goes to the bridge view site where Naz and Andrea stopped.Freddy comes to Naz's cell. He says Naz has some secrets, some rage, and likes him for it.Stone and a woman lie in bed, he says the meds are messing him up, offers her a cat.The next day the doctor says steroids do reduce libido, but he can choose between excema and erections.The DA interviews Trevor Williams about the night, Trevor is belligerent, the DA crosses him off the list of potential witnesses.Naz shaves his head. He smokes and watches TV with Freddy and his crew. Freddy and Naz play chess.Stone asks for Viagra at the drugstore, but they have none in stock, until Wednesday.Box finds more video cameras.John goes to a restaurant and asks the waiter for ketamine, he knows Andrea called him. With some prodding the waiter admits he gave her the drugs, and she still owed him money. Stone says he will be made to testify in court.Stone and Kapoor go to Andrea's house, they bring an investigator who takes more photos and pokes around. The man asks about the cat, Stone admits he has it. The man checks the rear gate, which doesn't close properly, and yard. Stone offers Kapoor the cat. Kapoor wonders how much the man will cost, Stone says it is a flat rate. The man finds some blood in the backyard.The DA sees the video of the two men leaving the cab and Andrea entering. She says it shows Naz's premeditation to get one girl.Naz pounds the heavy bag under Freddy's eye.The DA goes to see the Coroner. She asks him if Naz's hand wound could be caused by his hand slipping on a knife while stabbing, or cut on the broken glass. The Coroner agrees it was caused by stabbing.Naz is bold now and changes the TV channel in the common room, the angry prisoners calm when they realize he is with Freddy.Stone buys Viagra from a guy in a washroom.Naz has a job stencilling walls. He is summoned to Freddy's room. Freddy explains another prisoner Petey will be getting some eightballs from his lady which Naz has to smuggle in.Stone buys an assortment of cat toys, brings to the room and quickly closes the door. He hears the cat playing. Stone then cleans himself up, combs his hair and takes a blue pill. He goes to his favourite hooker's bar and says he's ready to go. But another richer looking customer interrupts.The DA brings in the tox reports; MDMA, ketamine in both, amphetamine only in Naz. Kapoor also gets the reports, Stone says the they don't really know Naz. Naz practices swallowing grapes.At Riker's Stone asks Naz about the tox screen. The defendant is defensive, Stone figures it was Adderall, which can also be a problem for the case. Petey passes Naz four speedballs which he palms and swallows behind his hand. Naz also recounts the night and says there were two men outside Andrea's house, not one. Stone has noticed the speedballs and warns Naz the case is over if he is caught.In the cell, Naz has to crap into a tub front of the others, three come out easily, Naz gulps laxative to get the fourth out.Kapoor and Stone watch the Trevor Williams interview. As he told the police he was alone they realize he was lying. At a laundromat Stone confronts Trevor. He convinces the young man to admit there was another man named Dwayne Reed.Later, Stone calls Kapoor to confirm there is a known thug named Dwayne Reed, with an open arrest warrant. He goes to a convenience store, asks to see Reed and is eventually directed to the back. Warily going there, he sees three men playing cards. 6. | Samson and Delilah | John Stone, wearing a N95 mask, scoops droppings from his cat's litter box, then returns the box to the room.Freddy gives Naz a cell phone to call his family, then smokes up, Naz watches. Mrs. Khan goes to a job interview, she has been dismissed from her job due to the publicity.Detective Box and cops review Facebook and note someone named Amir wrote some posts praising Naz. DA Helen Weiss interviews a teacher.A prisoner asks to use Naz's cell, he refuses.Stone visits Chinatown to try a Chinese doctor. The doctor measures out some powders and charges $300.Freddy and his crew watch Naz get a tattoo 'SIN' on his knuckles. Freddy completes a Rubik's Cube. Freddy says he gave Naz the phone to make money from it selling time.Chandra Kapoor watches the gas station video and notices the hearse driver. She grabs a screenshot of the hearse license plate. She tracks it down and finds the car and driver. She mentions the video. The driver says Andrea gave off bad vibrations. He tells Chandra to read the Bible, Judges 16.Stone makes the Chinese concoction with water and drinks it down. Chandra arrives with a Bible, she reads the passage and says the undertaker is creepy and scary. He pours a whiskey for both.Naz does push ups, his shoulders are growing.Box notes Naz went to a High School 40 minutes away from his home. Box interviews a Basketball Coach who says Naz was expelled for fighting in grade 9.Naz and Kapoor carry on drinking in a bar. She broke up with her boyfriend. Stone preaches about life post 9/11. Later John leaves a voicemail for his son, asking to get together.Jury selection begins.Box and Stone meet briefly, Box mentions the high school incident. Stone then shows the report to Kapoor. Naz explains he was bullied after 9/11, he had reached a breaking point. Kapoor says she understands.Naz's brother sprays a line of red paint on school lockers.Kapoor drafts her opening remarks. Stone calls her to keep it short. A deliveryman appears with a bag, leaves before she can pay. The bag is left in the hall.Naz gets a white shirt and a tie from Freddy but returns them. Stone dresses, his feet are better. He puts on new shoes. In the courthouse he is happy to show Chandra his shoes, she is still working on her speech.Naz comes in with a blue shirt, Stone quickly exchanges shirts with his beige one, saying Naz should wear white. Weiss makes her opening remarks first. Kapoor gives a short response that the burden of proof is on the State.Weiss goes through the video of the Cab at the toll booth. She then shows the two men leaving the cab. Then, buying beer, and only Andrea's DNA on a beer bottle. And to close the day, Naz's blood is on a parking ticket.Naz is taken back to Rikers.Stone is at his foot group. He tells them about the Chinese medicine.Freddy tells Naz he is at Rikers because it is closer to his family, and he put up with another murder charge to do so. Freddy asks if Naz really likes his life outside. Naz then smokes crack with Freddy.The next trial day Weiss goes through the traffic stop of Naz by Officer Wiggins. Wiggins explains how she found the knife. They show a video of Naz trying to escape at the Precinct.Naz gets more tattoos and smokes more crack back at Rikers. Freddy says Kapoor's belief in him is unimportant. Naz then sees another of Freddy's crew getting a blowjob from Petey. He calls Kapoor on his cell and says goodnight. He sells time on his phone to another prisoner.The BJ prisoner warns Naz at knifepoint in the showers not to tell Freddy.Stone reviews the photos of the house. He asks Chandra how Andrea could live in a $10million house. Using a laptop he does a title search, and sees the house is listed to Evelyn Cornish, in probate. He goes to the young man, Raymond Halle, who is a Financial Advisor and was arguing with Andrea's stepfather Don Taylor at the funeral. Halle agrees to talk off the record. He says Taylor is a deadbeat personal trainer, who was not entitled to half the estate, but now will get it all. Stone stops by a Fitness Club and sees Taylor giving personal attention to another woman. více |

7. | Ordinary Death | Dept Box is at a new crime scene, a young woman is dead in the street with bloody wounds. He tells another cop it looks like Andrea Cornish.The DA shows the Court photos of Andrea Cornish's murder scene. Weiss ties in the knife, the Coroner Dr. Chester says Naz's hand wound was hand slipping. Safar Khan leaves the Courtroom. Kapoor brings in the 22 wounds, questions the knife wound in her cross. She brings up a disputed testimony in the past, and makes Chester look bad. After adjournment,Taylor goes out for a smoke, Stone follows.Kapoor tells Safar Khan it looks bad for her to leave, but Mrs. Khan has lost belief in her son.Taylor has lunch with another woman, Stone watches.Salim Khan walks by some anti-Muslim graffiti, a woman in Hajib disses him. The three Pakistanis plan how to get into the cab business again, the other two want Salim to sell his share but they low ball him with $75,000, he walks out calling them thieves.Naz takes more crack in his cell.Someone throws a rock through the Khan's window as Safar looks at Naz's childhood pictures.The Court goes over the scratches on Naz's back.Stone questions a fitness trainer as Taylor works on the other side of the gym.Stone meets the Accountant, he gets the lowdown on Taylor's maxed out credit cards and how he has declared bankruptcy twice.Stone meets another of Taylor's ex-wives. She's a cougar and divorced him after some violence.Weiss grills a classmate of Naz, who had bought Adderall for $10 for 10 mg. Naz had a prescription and was re-selling.Waking up, Stone notices something on his ear, he curses the cat. Stone goes to his son's school, to show him his shoes and also to offer the cat. The teen is dismissive and has to go. Someone follows Stone.Naz sees Petey and the other crew member Victor going off together. He see's Petey's mother in visitation, assures her he is fine, then palms the speedballs, looking dismayed.The basketball coach talks about the Grade 9 incident. Kapoor brings up how badly Muslim students were treated after 9/11. The coach surprises the court by saying Naz was the only one who sent two others to the hospital, Naz had thrown a full coke can at another kid. Kapoor is silent, Weiss says the State rests.The Khans sell their gold and silver.Taylor confronts Stone at the barbells, and threatens him.Naz calls his mother, now working as a cleaner. She refuses to take the call, he goes to watch TV with Freddy.Kapoor has Det. Box on the stand. She wonders why Naz hadn't confessed, the detective believes in the evidence.Stone goes to play with the cat wearing a mask and rubber gloves. Later the cat escapes the room and goes to sleep with Stone. In the morning he wheezes and hurriedly puts it back in the room and goes to the Chinese doctor to have his ear examined.Det. Box fills out retirement forms in a bar.Salim Khan and his Pakistani partners close a deal at a bank, he takes his cheque.Kapoor draws out the drugs, the ketamine and ecstasy sold to Andrea by the waiter.Naz and Kapoor meet in a cell. He wonders why she is working for him, only his father believes in him. She says she does, they have a moment, they kiss, then Chandra pulls back and leaves the holding cell.In a Copy Shop, Stone is getting graphics printed, the clerk thinks they are for "Law & Order"Dr. Katz, the defense expert witness, tells the court there is a missing knife from a unique set of four. The knife game, mumblety-peg, is discussed. The front gate is introduced, rusty and ajar for many years. The rear gate is also open, and the 2nd floor window was open, accessible from a tree. Also, the view of the kitchen is screened by anyone going from the front door up the stairs. Weiss tries to shoot down Katz as a fame seeking celebrity pathologist. She pulls out a quote when Katz had praised Dr.Chester, he dismisses it as a polite dinner comment. She gets him to concede the fourth knife could have gone missing anytime, but Katz holds firm on the wounds.Stone finds out about the asthma inhaler, tagged as #39. Stone subpoenas Box on his last work day and Kapoor has him on the stand. They go over Trevor Williams, Duane Reed, the undertaker. Then the asthma inhaler Box returned to Naz. She labels his actions as unprofessional, and he may have subconsciously tried to hide it.In jail Naz takes a leak, and finds Petey has slashed his wrists, is dead.Box goes to a bar, his retirement party.Freddy is puzzled why Petey did it, this messes up their drug running. Naz says he has something to tell him.In the morning, Freddy kills Victor, the BJ receiver, while Naz distracts the guard.Box ponders his golf club and other gifts. více |

8. | The Call of the Wild | Det (Ret) Box has a drink at a bar and listens to two guys discuss plots for new cop shows. The next day he reviews the Andrea Cornish video and notices she appeared to be nervous about being followed.In court Chandra Kapoor examines Trevor Williams. Williams explains he was with Dwayne Reed on the street outside Andrea's house. Weiss has no questions. Kapoor then questions Reed, wearing an orange prison suit. Reed has done 7 home break-ins with a knife and has a history of other violent crimes. Weiss has no questions.Stone explains to Kapoor that Weiss is worried but is trying not to show the jury. Kapoor then questions the undertaker. He has had a previous knife violence incident and it cannot be verified where he went after leaving the gas station.Stone gives Don Taylor a subpoena in an alleyway and angrily threatens Taylor with an ex-client from NewJersey, in response to their fitness club incident. Kapoor questions Taylor and brings out that he will be inheriting the $10million house. Taylor denies killing Andrea and is non-chalant about his gold-digging, he even applied for the estate before the funeral.Box finds other video of Andrea leaving a restaurant and arguing with a man on the sidewalk. He forces the manager to give up the credit card receipts for that night.Naz scrapes up his last crack for a hit.Kapoor tells Stone she wants to call Naz to the stand, Stone says it is a mistake, they have already shown reasonable doubt and Naz could undo it all. In the holding cell, Kapoor asks Naz if he will do it, he agrees but needs a favour first.Box meets an old buddy who runs a private Security firm, he asks him to get info on the credit card receipts. Kapoor buys condoms at a drug store then goes to a street drug dealer.Naz is brought back to the Courthouse, suffering some withdrawal symptoms. Once again in the holding cell, Kapoor surreptitiously passes him a pill, and the package from her vagina.On the stand, Naz is in his white shirt, Kapoor takes him through the night. Naz is calm, contrite and maintains his innocence. Helen Weiss goes on cross, she pressures Naz on his Adderall sales, the stolen cab, the details of the sex with Andrea, why he didn't call 911 and why he took the knife. Naz is left flustered and a little less sure. Kapoor then says the Defense rests.Stone is pessimistic and tells Kapoor they have 0% chance of winning. Later, Stone brings the cat back to the Animal Shelter. On Friday, the Judge tells the jury to have an electronics- free weekend.Naz gets a row of crosses tattooed on his neck, Stone tosses the cat toys and litter box into a dumpster.Box studies a list of phone numbers and calls. He underlines a series of calls from Raymond Halle. He tries to find out about a shooting in a strip club the year before. At a golf course he plays behind another group and watches them hole out. At a Casino, he plays slots and watches a young man do the same. At the bar Box introduces himself to Ray Halle, a financial advisor. Box remembers Halle had been shot in a strip club, then mentions Andrea Cornish. He shows the screenshot of Ray and Andrea arguing, and suspects the two had a relationship and probably unauthorized withdrawals from her trust fund. Halle leaves.Freddy and Naz play cards, a new intake is brought in, Naz goes to speak to a nervous young man. He suggests he can get him some protection. Naz reports to Freddy the man is married.Box reports his findings to Weiss, he shows a $300,000 withdrawal from Andrea's account, then a series of camera shots showing Halle's travels the murder night. Weiss doesn't take the new evidence.In Rikers the guard gives Freddy a DVD showing Kapoor kissing Naz in the holding cell. Stone sees a package on his doorstep and watches the same video. Kapoor rehearses her closing argument. Stone goes to see Naz and says this could be grounds for a mistrial, and that Kapoor's career is probably over. Naz agrees to let Stone present the DVD. The judge watches the video with Weiss, Stone and Kapoor. He orders Stone to take over the Closing, who protests and has no luck pushing the mistrial. The disc will be given to the Legal Ethics Committee.At a Chinese restaurant Stone runs into Box and says the video didn't work, Box denies it but Stone suspects Box has another lead in the case. Chandra Kapoor meets Alison Crowe, and is fired, after the trial.Helen Weiss makes her closing statement, stressing Naz' blackout during the murder is a convenient excuse. Box is in the courtroom but leaves noisily when Weiss states Naz is the only suspect. She picks up the knife and points out the 22 stab wounds, then seems to pause as if in thought. In the evening Stone struggles with his draft Argument, his eczema breaks out. He takes a chlorine bath and goes to Emergency. The doctors toss out his Chinese herbal remedy, and hint this is stress-related.In court, Stone wearing white gloves, speaks to the jury in plain fashion declaring Naz has the Constitutional Right of Presumption of Innocence Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. He acknowledges Naz stole a car, used illegal drugs, ran instead of reporting, made an illegal left turn, resisted arrest. However the murder case is only circumstantial and the police did not bother to investigate anyone else. Everyone then awaits the jury decision.Naz is sent back to Rikers. Stone picks up a prescription but turns down the Viagra back order. Chandra cleans out her desk. Freddy reveals to Naz why he protected him, he sensed Naz had an innocence, and took care of him so as not to be a completely cold individual, Naz takes a hit of crack.The next day the jury foreperson announces the jury is hung 6-6. The judge is upset, when offered, DA Helen Weiss declines to prosecute a re-trial. Stone tells Naz he is free. Chandra leaves the court. Weiss changes to sneakers and leaves, Box watches her.Naz packs his stuff into a bag at Rikers and does his out routine. Freddy is in the gym punching the heavy bag, the guard passes on a gift to Naz, a paperback "Call of the Wild". Safir Khan is there to pick up his son, they hug on the sidewalk.Box is working Campus Security. Weiss meets him and asks for his help to get Ray Halle.Naz has an uneasy dinner at home with his family. He is upset his mother didn't support him. Naz goes out alone and meets Stone at a cafe in the Pakistani neighbourhood. The lawyer says life goes on and urges Naz to put it behind him and to disregard how others look at him. His old school friend comes in, the prosecution witness; Naz scares him off with a prison staredown. Stone takes a subway home, his advert, "no fee until you're free" is above the door. Naz takes crack at the same waterfront spot as the night of, and remembers sharing the moment with Andrea. Stone watches TV, a new client calls. An Animal Cruelty commercial plays, Stone goes to recover the cat. více |
