The chronicles of a hotel frequented by Charlie Chaplin, Konrad Adenauer, and Adolf Hitler. (Part 2 of 2).
Behind the white Art Nouveau facade, a power struggle is raging over the future of the flourishing Rheinhotel. Junior boss Emil Dreesen relies on amusement, glamor and cosmopolitanism - completely contrary to the ideas of his national conservative father Fritz. His idea of inviting movie star Charlie Chaplin as a guest turns out to be a brilliant PR move. In family matters, too, he asserts himself against his parents Fritz and Maria. When his younger sister Ulla gives birth to the illegitimate child of the Senegalese-French soldier Bakary Diarra, Emil resolutely ensures that the boy can grow up in the family and that racism is not counteracted passively. In any case, Emil paid no attention to the "good reputation" in the arch-Catholic Bad Godesberg. He engages the singer Claire Deltour from Paris, whose revealing vaudeville program causes a stir and snubs dangerous regular guests: Adolf Hitler and his entourage, who use the hotel as their headquarters on the Rhine. While Emil's parents seek the appreciation of the up-and-coming power politician, the junior boss persistently refuses to give him the "leader's salute". However, when he is threatened with arrest by a local SA man, Emil has to betray his own principles - not without consequences. více |
